Medical Supply: We have met with area hospital representatives regarding how supplies are purchased and where the distribution of these supplies occurs. What we found out is that hospitals buy in groups along with other regional hospitals for economy of scale. These "buyer" organizations use national medical distribution companies that are typically centrally located to large metro areas in order to limit transportation costs. These distribution corridors are typically along I-94 from Detroit heading west toward Kalamazoo. This allows access to I-94, I-75 and I-69 to service Flint, Lansing and southeast Michigan. The conclusion of this is we are not in a central location to customers and in fact we are on the fringe of the market area. The only suggestion would be for the import/export of medical goods between Ontario and Michigan. This area needs to be investigated.
